Your Zodiac Sign May Not Be What You Think!

Learn your TRUE Sun Sign according to the Astronomically Correct Vedic Zodiac.

As a serious Vedic Astrologer, I sometimes get tired of explaining to my well-meaning friends who follow Western Astrology that the Western Zodiac signs no longer align with each month, as they did thousands of years ago. It is hard for me to respond to the enthusiastic astrology posts that they share with me, beyond a polite smile and a "thank you," as I inwardly shake my head – Because I know that the actual planetary energy happening at the moment is no longer in alignment with the calendar months.

And I get it… Western astrology information is blasted all over the internet.  And it is a system that absolutely works, when receiving a full reading from a skilled Western Astrologer who interprets the energy of the planets based on a fixed system of relativity to one another.

But when it is March 29, my birthday for example, and Western Astrology claims that the Sun is in Aries, because according to the calendar every year the Sun shines its light in the constellation of Aries from March 21 to April 21... I can’t pretend to be excited about the fiery Mars energy of “Aries” when the ACTUAL position of the Sun is really still in the watery sign of Pisces. There is a huge difference between the “Ram”-bunctious energy of Aries and the dreamy energy of Pisces!

I know this mismatch intimately because as mentioned  March 29 is my birthday, and for most of my life, I tried to identify as the Aries Sun Western Astrology said I was.

And in some ways, Aries did feel like me - spontaneous, the life of the party, creative, a leader in the realm of children’s music - that’s because Venus - the planet of joy, connection to other people, creativity and fun - was in the constellation of Aries when I was born. In my chart, Aries governs my public life: career, reputation, and the work I bring into the world. So yes, there is an Aries expression in how I show up publicly and how I connect with other people.

But there was also a deeper, quieter part of me that felt more introspective, more dreamy and imaginative … certainly more contemplative. A psychological energy that needed quiet space… meditation… reflection. Even as a teenager I was leading guided meditations and laying in the grass feeling my inner energy. So Picarian!

So when I learned in my first year of Ayurveda school that my Sun sign was actually Pisces, which explains my - real energy- everything clicked! Astrology suddenly felt precise, accurate, and meaningful. And that’s when I began studying Vedic astrology.

To understand why your own Sun sign might not be what you think, you have to look past the calendar and look directly at the physical sky.

Using my March 29th birthday as the example ... if you check a stargazing app or look through a telescope, you’ll see the Sun is actually shining through the constellation of Pisces from March 14 to April 13.

Yet in Western astrology, Aries begins at the March equinox around March 21 - which did align with the actual sky a few thousand years ago… (I’ll explain why in a moment). From that point - the Spring Equinox - the zodiac was aligned with the calendar year, creating the familiar zodiac months Western Astrology still uses today. Brilliant! How wonderfully convenient… and easy for people to understand their zodiac sign.

Until… the sky slowly shifted.

The Earth slowly wobbles on its axis - like a spinning top so over thousands of years, this wobble has shifted the Sun’s position along the zodiac belt of the ecliptic by about 24 degrees. So the constellations we see today no longer line up with the zodiac dates that were originally aligned with the calendar months.

Western astrology chose to keep that original calendar-based system, which still works ok within its framework in a full birth chart reading that looks at all of your planets - not just your Sun sign. But if you’re simply labeling yourself by the zodiac sign the calendar assigns, it may not match the constellation the Sun was actually shining through when you were born. Which means… it may not fully reflect your true nature - the way your energy naturally expresses. At the same time, that zodiac energy may still be very strong somewhere else in your chart like it was for me through Venus!

The Sun sign represents your core personality - your soul light, your confidence, the way you shine out into the world. And in the Vedic, or sidereal zodiac, it is often found in the previous sign - the actual constellation the Sun was shining through - rather than the sign assigned by the calendar.

There is about a 6° overlap window where the Sun can fall in the same sign in both systems. My bestie Deborah was born on February 13, when the Sun was still in that overlap. So she truly is an Aquarius Sun in both systems. So much easier for her! Most people, however, don’t fall into that overlap.

So you might be wondering… “Great… how do I figure out my real Sun sign if I don’t know how to read Vedic astrology?”

Good question.

The simplified list below shows the exact dates the Sun occupies each constellation along the ecliptic. These astronomical timelines also dictate the precise signs where the New and Full Moons occur. Notice that most Vedic signs fall roughly 23 to 24 days later than the Western calendar dates.

  1. Aries: April 14 to May 14

  2. Taurus:  May 15 to June 14

  3. Gemini: June 15 to July 15

  4. Cancer: July 16 to August 16

  5. Leo: August 17 to September 16

  6. Virgo: September 17 to October 16

  7. Libra: October 17 to November 15

  8. Scorpio: November 16 to December 15

  9. Sagittarius: December 16 to January 13

  10. Capricorn: January 14 to February

  11. Aquarius: February 13 to March 13

  12. Pisces: March 14 to April 13

Please note – the dates can vary slightly from year to year, due to the complexities of astronomical calculations involved in determining the exact positions of the planets. It's always best to consult a professional Vedic astrologer for accurate and personalized information regarding your zodiac sign and birth chart.
